("The apex and the abrupt end of the French golden age of herpetology"). - Catalogue of the Library of The Zoological Society in London, 4th ed., S. 110. - The Herpetological Library of Adrian Crane, AC74. - Mit dem kolorierten Tafelsatz wie hier von großer Seltenheit. - Die erste umfangreiche wissenschaftliche Bestandsaufnahme zu Amphibien und Reptilien, geplant und unter Beihilfe seines Sohnes Auguste Henri André Duméril und seines Mitarbeiter Gabriel Bibron im wesentlichen verfasst von dem französischen Zoologen Marie André Constant Duméril (1774-1860). Duméril schöpfte bei der empirischen Grundlegung seines magnum opus aus den reichen Beständen des Pariser Naturgeschichtlichen Museum, deren ichthyologische und herpetologische Abteilungen er von 1825-57 leitete. Dieses beherbergte damals, auch durch zahlreiche Erwerbungen, Enteignungen und Beschlagnahmungen im Zuge der napoleonischen Kriege die größte herpetologische Sammlung der Welt. - Die ebenso mit feiner Linie von mehreren Stechern in Stahl gearbeiteten, wie sauber und farbfrisch kolorierten und satt gedruckten Tafeln nach Zeichnungen von E. Blanchard, F. Bocourt, J. G. Prêtre u.a. Der Tafelband mit dem lithographierten Porträt von Bibron (gest. 1848) von F. Bocourt als Frontispiz. - Provenienz: 1. Edoardo de Betta (1822-96), italienischer Naturforscher, mit dessen (klein) gestempeltem Monogramm auf allen Titelbll. - 2. Gaston-François de Witte (1897-1980), bedeutender belgischer Herpetologe und Afrikaforscher, mit dessen illustriertem Ex-Libris auf allen Vorderspiegeln bzw. dem vorderen Vorsatz verso (Tafelbd.) und mit dessen Besitzerstempel auf den Vorsätzen aller Bde. - 3. Kraig Adler (geb. 1940), namhafter U.S.-amerikanischer Herpetologe, mit dessen Ex Libris auf allen Vorderspiegel und zahlr. hs. Annotationen auf den Vorsätzen. - 4. Prof. Dr. Manfred Niekisch (1951-2024), deutscher Biologie und Direktor des Frankfurter Zoos. - Gemäß Angaben von Kraig Adler wurde auf Basis dieses Exemplarsatzes der "Erpétologie générale" von der U.S.-amerikanischen "Society for the Studies of Amphibians and Reptiles" (SSAR) ein Nachdruck veranstaltet. - Es fehlt eine Falttabelle, diese liegt in Kopie bei. Teils stärker stockfleckig, insgesamt gut erhaltener, aufgrund der Provenienzen unikaler Exemplarsatz, in der ersten Ausstattung mit den handkolorierten Stahlstichen und zudem in schmucker zeitgenössischer Bindung.

Natural Sciences – Zoology.- The epoch-making scientific herpetology of Duméril, complete set with four prominent provenances and the atlas volume with all 120 steel engraved plates, 102 of them in the scarce coloured state. - "The 'Erpétolgie Générale' was the first work that gave a comprehensive scientific account of all amphibians and reptiles, including their anatomy, physiology, systematics, and associated literature." (Adler, p. 32) - The most monumental work was compiled by French zoologist Marie André Constant Duméril (1774-1860) with assistance of his colleague Gabriel Bibron and Dumérils son Auguste Henri André. For the empirical basis of his magnum opus Duméril could drew on the rich holdings of the Paris Museum of Natural History, whose ichthyological and herpetological departments he headed from 1825 to 1857 (succeeded by his son). At that time, the museum housed the largest herpetological collection in the world, partly due to numerous acquisitions, expropriations and confiscations in the wake of the Napoleonic Wars. - The plates, finely engraved in steel, neatly and vividly coloured as well as richly printed, are based on drawings by E. Blanchard, F. Bocourt, J. G. Prêtre and others. The atlas volume features a lithographed portrait of Bibron (died 1848) by F. Bocourt as frontispiece. The plates are accompanied by 20 (of 21) folded tables. - Provenance: 1. Edoardo de Betta (1822-96), Italian zoologist, with his stamped monogram on all title pages. - 2. Gaston-François de Witte (1897-1980), important Belgian herpetologist and African explorer, with his illustrated book-plate on all front endpapers and the front fly-leaf verso (atlas volume) as well as with his owner's stamp on the fly-leaves of all volumes. - 3. Kraig Adler (born 1940), renowned U.S.-American herpetologist, with his book-plate on all front endpapers and numerous handwritten annotations on the endpapers. - 4. Prof. Dr. Manfred Niekisch (1951-2024), German biologist and director of Frankfurt Zoo. - According to Kraig Adler, this set of copies was used for a reprint of the 'Erpétologie générale' by the U.S. 'Society for the Studies of Amphibians and Reptiles' (SSAR). - A folding table is missing, but a copy is included. Partially and occasionally heavily foxed, otherwise overall well preserved, a truly unique set of due to its outstanding provenance, particularly scarce with hand-coloured steel engravings and in a decorative contemporary binding.
