Mit 1 blattgroßen Holzschnitt, 1 Initiale und Druckermarke im Holzschnitt (diese faks.) Straßburg, Heinrich Vogtherr d. Ä., 1538. 12 Bl. (Sig.: ai-ciii, ciiii faks.) 4°. Flex. Pgt. im Stil d. Renaissance geheftet auf fünf Fäden, mit dreifachen Filetenrahmen sowie floralen Mittel- und Eckstücken auf Vorder- und Hinterseite (neue Kapitalbändchen und Vorsätze aus Maschinbütten, fleckig und berieben).

Von großer Seltenheit, für uns auf Auktionen in den letzen mehr als 30 Jahren nur in 4 weiteren Exemplaren nachweisbar, wovon lediglich 2 vollständig. - Die kurze, anonym erschienene Abhandlung befasst sich mit der Anatomie des Auges und häufigen Erkrankungen dieses Organs, darunter Bindehautentzündung, Grauer Star, Juckreiz, Infektionen der Hornhaut. Erwähnt werden auch Heilmittel, meist pharmazeutische Präparate aus der Volksmedizin - Augentropfen, Salben, Pulver, Destillate und Tinkturen - sowie Hinweise zur Prophylaxe und zur Klärung des Sehvermögens. - Der blattfüllende, von Vogtherr anatomisch akkurat geschnittene Holzschnitt auf auf Bl. Ai recto zeigt sowohl den Sehnerv, als auch Vorderansicht und Querschnitt des Auges - Fehlt Bl. ciiii mit der Holzschnitt-Druckermarke unter Einbeziehung des Porträt Vogtherrs recto, diese auf Maschinbütten faksimiliert eingebunden. - In den Rändern teils wasserrandig, finger- und schmutzfleckig, Bl. B recto mit älterer hs. Marginalie in Bleistift. Insgesamt sauberes Exemplar dieses medizinhistorisch bedeutenden Rarums.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Ophthalmology. - First illustrated treatise on eye diseases, of particular rarity, spectacularly illustrated with 1 full page wood-cut of the eye. - For references see above. - At the same time, the second printed work ever on the subject after Grassi's "De Oculis" (1477). Extremely rare, only 4 other copies have been found by us at auctions in the last 30 years, of which only 2 are complete. - This short, anonymously published treatise deals with the anatomy of the eye and common diseases of this organ, including conjunctivitis, cataracts, itching, and infections of the cornea. It also mentions remedies, mostly pharmaceutical preparations from folk medicine - eye drops, ointments, powders, distillates, and tinctures - as well as advice on prophylaxis and clarification of vision. - The full-page woodcut on fol. Ai recto, anatomically accurately engraved by Vogtherr himself, shows both the optic nerve and a front view and cross-section of the eye. - Fol. ciiii with the woodcut printer's mark, including Vogtherr's portrait recto, is missing, this has been facsimile-printed on machine-made paper and bound in. - Some leaves with water-staining, finger-staining, and soiled in the margins, fol. B recto with older handwritten marginalia in pencil. Overall, a clean copy of this truly rare item of medical historical significance.
