Ostdeutsche Kunst – Schwind/Hilse, P 67/03.
East German Art – Bronze with black-brown patina. Standing leg monogrammed on the back, at the bottom of the right leg inscribed 'II. I.'. - Slight dusting in the recesses, plinth only slightly oxidised in few spots. Overall very well preserved. Splendid cast with homogeneous patina and expressive surface modelling. - The sculpture, which is central to Fritz Cremer's oeuvre both iconographically and biographically, belongs to the series of figures entitled 30 Years of the October Revolution, created in 1967. The project included five bronze figures, each symbolising a decade of development between the October Revolution of 1917 and the anniversary year of 1967. This study, 'Aufsteigender II' (Ascending II), formed the basis for a monumental further development by Cremer. On the occasion of the simultaneous admission of the two German states to the United Nations, the GDR donated a cast of the monumental sculpture based on 'Aufsteigender II', which was installed in the park of the UN headquarters in New York City. Two further copies can be found today in front of the Kunsthalle Rostock and in Plauen in the Vogtland region.
