Lot 205 Alfred Hrdlicka.

Insgesamt sehr gut. In kräftigen Strichen erfasste, expressive Komposition.

In: Hrdlicka Faust Bühnenbilder, 1983.)

Austrian Art – Charcoal and coloured chalk on brown Fabriano Roma laid paper (with watermark). Signed and dated. Spot mounted to underlying mat, framed free-standing under plexiglass. - Some occasional fingerstaining or slight smudging due to the technique, small pinholes in the corners and traces of previous mounting on the verso. Overall very good. Expressive composition captured in bold strokes. - Cf. Hilger (ed.), Hrdlicka Faust Bühnenbilder, 1983, p. 34 (with illustration). - With 'Antikenporno', Alfred Hrdlicka created a provocative series of drawings and sculptures in which he explored motifs from ancient art and mythology and combined them with explicit, erotic depictions. 'Hrdlicka ironises (...) the German image of antiquity, which, according to Hrdlicka's thesis, ultimately constituted itself as an ideal of classical beauty from a visual material of ruins' (Paul Kruntorad, 'Bühnenbild als Kunst. Art as stage design'. In: Hrdlicka Faust Bühnenbilder, 1983.) He playfully explores the boundary between art and pornography in order to thematise questions of power, violence and sexuality in society. Hrdlicka's works in this series often provoked fierce controversy, as they were seen as a breach of taboo in relation to the classical depiction of antiquity.
