De rerum varietate libri XVII. Mit 2 Falttafeln (unzerschnittene Volvellen für Planisphäre), Porträt des Autors, Titel- und Schlussvignette (Druckermarken), zahlreichen, oft großen Textfiguren (wovon 7 blattfüllend), sowie mehreren bewohnten und/oder floral ornamentierten Initialen, alles im Holzschnitt, sowie 1 Falttabelle. Basel, Sebastian Heinrich Petri, 1581. Kl.-8°. 40 Bll. (Sign. a-e8), 1171 (1) S. 8°. Blindgeprägter Schweinslederband im Stil der Spätrenaissance datiert "1594" auf vier doppelten Bünden über leichten Holzdecken, die Decken mittels Fileten zu drei bis fünf Linien in je drei Felder mit Umrahmung gegliedert. Das Mittelfeld recto mit betiteltem Plattenstempel des Porträts von Friedrich Wilhelm I. von Sachsen-Weimar, im Feld darüber die Initialen "M I" und "W W", darunter die Datierung. Das Mittelfeld verso mit Plattenstempel des herzoglichen Wappen. Die Rahmung beider Decken mit Rollstempel von behelmten Männerköpfen im Profil, unterbrochen von Rankenwerk. Ornamental punzierter Schnitt (Mittelfeld mit Einschnitt an zwei Seiten, etwas fleckig, an den Ecken gering bestoßen und berieben).

Alte Drucke, Bibeln, Klassische Autoren in den Originalsprachen – Zweite Baseler, um eine Volvelle vermehrte Ausgabe der Fortsetzung von Cardanos Hauptwerk "De subtilitate", hier vollständig und im prächtigen Einband, vermutlich aus der Werkstatt des Weimarer Hofbuchbinders Lukas Weischner. - VD16 C 921. - Adams I, 666 u. 662 (für die Ausg. 1577 in Folio). - Brunet I, Sp. 1573. - BM/STC German S. 182 (erwähnt für 1577 bereits eine Oktavausg.) - Dibner, Heralds of Science, 139 - Norman 402. - Supra Libros, H. 27 (Juni 2022), Jahresbericht der HAAB, S. 9f., Abb. eines vergleichbaren Einbandes, S. 10. - Girolamo Cardanos (1501-76) "De subtilitate" stellt die fortschrittlichste Darstellung angewandter Physik ihrer Zeit dar. "In it he (Cardano) clearly differentiated between the attraction of rubbed amber (electrical) and the loadstone (magnetic) ... Natural law was unified and omnipotent, to be learnt thru experiment and empiricism." (Dibner). - Das zuerst 1577 bei Henricus Petri in Basel erschienene Werk erlebte rasche mehrere Ausgaben (sh. dazu Adams). - Provenienz: 1. Friedrich Wilhelm I., Herzog von Sachsen Weimar (1562-1602), vgl. die Ausführungen und Referenz zum Einband. - 2. Josef B. Holzinger (1835-1912), österreichischer Rechtsanwalt, "Hexenforscher" und Bibliophiler, mit dessen illustriertem lithographischen Ex Libris von "J. Wüst. wohl aus den 1880er-Jahren, montiert auf dem Vorsatzblatt recto. (Vgl. O. Weigel, Antiquariats- und Auktionsinst., Hg.: Bibliothek J. B. Holzinger I. Versteigerung am 19. November 1912. Vereinzelt mit kaum sichtbaren Wasserändern, sonst wohlerhaltenes, breitrandiges Exemplar des Rarums im herzoglichen Einband.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – With 2 folding plates (uncut volvellves for planisphere), portrait of the author, printer's marks on title page and last page, numerous, often large text illustrations (7 of which full-paged), as well as several inhabited and/or florally ornamented initials, all in wood-cut, 1 folding table. - Second Basel edition, enriched by an additional volvelle, of the supplement of Cardano's magnum opus 'De subtilitate', here complete and in a magnificent blind embossed pigskin binding of the late Renaissance with fore edge decoration, executed for Friedrich Wilhelm, Duke of Saxe-Weimar, presumably from the workshop of the Weimar court bookbinder Lukas Weischner. - Girolamo Cardano (1501-76) 'De subtilitate' represents the most advanced presentation of applied physics of its time. 'In it he (Cardano) clearly differentiated between the attraction of rubbed amber (electrical) and the loadstone (magnetic) ... Natural law was unified and omnipotent, to be learnt through experiment and empiricism.' (Dibner). - First published in 1577 by Henricus Petri in Basel, the work quickly went through several editions (see Adams). - Provenance: 1. Friedrich Wilhelm I, Duke of Saxe-Weimar (1562-1602), cf. the comments and reference on the binding. - 2. Josef B. Holzinger (1835-1912), Austrian lawyer, 'witch researcher' and bibliophile, with his illustrated lithographic ex libris from "J. Wüst. probably from the 1880s, mounted on the front flyleaf. (Cf. O. Weigel, Antiquariats- und Auktionsinst., ed.: Bibliothek J. B. Holzinger I. Auction on 19 November 1912. Leipzig, 1912 (preface, the copy not listed there). - Front paste-down with extensive annotations by an older hand. Wrong pagination '770' instead of 670. Occasional barely visible water-stains at margins otherwise well-preserved copy printed with wide margins of this rarity in ducal binding.
