Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Post-Incunabula. -Rare Editio Princeps of this seminal philosophical-scientific work attributed to the most prominent German medieval scholar, Albert the Great (1200-80), Dominican friar, bishop, philosopher and scientist. The "liber apprehensione" is a treatise in 12 parts, covering a vast cross-section of medieval psychology, physiology and the theory of knowledge. It deals with different forms of sensation, knowledge, wisdom and prophecy, all related to human understanding of the divine essence and God's knowledge of himself. "Apprehension" applies to a conception of conciousness in which nothig is affirmed or denied of the object in question, but the mind is merely aware of it. - Printed on laid paper with wide margins with elegant Gothic typeset, according to the watermark with paper made in southern Germany, presumably Eichstätt. - Provenance: Monastery Heiligenkreuz, Lower Austria, with two old stamps on lv. a1r, Hartung & Karl, Auction 18 (1976), lot no. 75. - Of great rarity in the trade, only 4 copies traceable for us at auctions in the last 90 years. - Binding slightly worn, leaf a1r with some browning and marginal staining, leaf (f6) somewhat worm-eaten, some leaves slightly creased and water-stained at margins.
