Amerika

- Sabin, J. Dictionary of books relating to America from its discovery to the present time, Bd. III, 9733 (paginiert fälschlich "XVI, 245"). - Palau y Dulcet, A. Manual del librero hispano-americano, Bd. 1, S. 294.

Geography and Travel – South America. - With 1 copper engraved frontispiece and 1 coloured copper engraved map by Juan de la Cruz Cano y Olmedilla after Casimiro Ortega. - Sabin, J. Dictionary of books relating to America from its discovery to the present time, vol. I, 9733 (paginated incorrectly 'XVI, 245'). - Palau y Dulcet, Manual del librero hispano-americano, vol. 1, p. 294 - Rare first Spanish edition of the report on John Byron's voyage around the world, with a focus on the coasts of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego, originally published in 1767 by one of the officers of the "Dolphin", presumably Charles Clerke. After reaching the Pacific via the Straits of Magellan, Byron was shipwrecked near Chiloe and became prisoner of the Spanish in Chile for three years until he escaped in 1744 and returned to his homeland. - 'This translation is more appreciated abroad than the English original because of the translator's annotations and additions.' (Palau) The large-format map of the Straits of Magellan, drawn and engraved especially for this Spanish edition by Casimiro Ortega, director of the Royal Botanical Gardens in Madrid, with splendid illustrated title cartouche and extensive captions, locations and measurements, the sea sections bodly mint-coloured. Frontispiece taken from the English edition of 1767. - Binding very slightly worn, spine somewhat time-stained. Some foxing at margins and on edges, wrong pagination '213' instead of '113', otherwise a well-preserved copy of this scarce item.
