Beitrag zur näheren Kenntniss der südamerikanischen Alligatoren nach gemeinschaftlichen Untersuchungen mit L. J. Fitzinger. Und: Lepidosiren paradoxa. Naturwissenschaften – Erste Ausgabe zweier höchst bedeutender und reich illustrierter Aufsätze des Erforschers der Zoologie Brasiliens, Johann Natterer. - Adler III, 64ff. - Der Wiener Zoologe Johann Baptist Natterer (1787-1843) war Teilnehmer an der österreichischen Brasilien-Expedition (1817-35), und zeichnete bzw. sicherte er in diesem Zusammenhang zigtausende botanische, mineralogische, ethnographische und vor allem zoologische Objekte für die Habsburger Sammlungen in Wien. - "Natterer's only herpetological title was his masterful review of the caimans of South America (1840). This covers all six of the species now known from the continent ... and is accompanied by eight excellent foldout plates showing the heads and necks in dorsal and lateral aspects. These were probably drawn by Natterer himself, who was an outstanding artist in his own right." Natural Sciences – First edition of two highly significant and richly illustrated essays by Johann Natterer, researcher of Brazilian zoology. - Adler III, 64ff. - With 9 lithographic plates, where of 1 folding, as well as futher 21 plates, where of 12 engraved and 9 lithographed, of which 2 coloured, as well as numerous tables. - The Viennese zoologist Johann Baptist Natterer (1787-1843) took part in the Austrian scientific expedition to Brazil (1817-35), during which he drew and secured tens of thousands of botanical, mineralogical, ethnographic and, above all, zoological objects for the Habsburg collections in Vienna. - 'Natterer's only herpetological title was his masterful review of the caimans of South America (1840). (Adler, p. 65) - The 'Annalen des Wiener Museums der Naturgeschichte' (Annals of the Vienna Museum of Natural History) was published in 1840 in two volumes, the first of which is presented here. It contains the two essays by Natterer as well as 9 further accounts (see above). - Provenance: Stamp of "Königl: Thier-Arzn: Schule" on p. 2. - Book-block slightly water-stained at the top margin, some plates with minor spore foxing, otherwise a well-preserved copy, the plates with mostly large-format illustrations are rich in contrast and clearly printed.
