Nietzscheana - Sammlung Dite

- Schaberg 28. - Schaberg, All Things Nietzsche, Kat. 16, S. 10-16. "It symbolized for Nietzsche "the extirpation of the German spirit in favor of the German Reich."

Philosophy and Sociology – First French edition of the last part of Nietzsche's "Meditations", published in the year following the first edition. Bound in a slightly later Bradel-style cardboard binding with gilt title on the spine on a mounted paper label. The boards are covered with marbled paper, and the original turquoise dust jacket with a typographic title on the front is bound in (minimal loss to the top edge, spine somewhat darkened, corners and edges slightly bumped). - For references see above. - The fourth and last work in a publication project originally planned by Nietzsche to comprise 13 texts on the social, philosophical, religious and economic issues of the time, containing a tribute to Wagner but also an early rejection of the emerging Wagner cult following the inauguration of the Bayreuth Festival that same year. "For Nietzsche, it symbolised 'the extirpation of the German spirit in favour of the German Reich'." (Schaberg, p. 16) - The translation was done by Marie Baumgartner-Köchlin (1831-97) from Lörrach in Baden, a close intellectual confidante and (corresponding) friend of Nietzsche's. Baumgartner met Nietzsche in 1874 through her son Adolf, who was studying Greek in Basel under the philosopher and who often acted as a reader and scribe for Nietzsche, who suffered from poor eyesight. Baumgartner translated "Schopenhauer als Erzieher" and the present essay on Wagner - the first publication of a text by Nietzsche in French - thereby contributing significantly to his early international success. - 1,100 to 1,200 copies were printed by Jahncke in Berlin for Schmeitzner. Even after several years, only 33 of these had been sold. Following Schmeitzner's insolvency in 1886 the remaining 967 copies passed into the hands of Nietzsche's first publisher Fritzsch and finally of printer-publisher Naumann, who stamped the front wrappers with his mark, as seen here. - A few faint marginal notes in pencil, browned throughout due to the paper for this edition. Overall, a very clean and attractively bound copy with two of the three margins deckle edge.
