Naturwissenschaften – Erste Ausgabe, selten. - "Important work" (Garrison/Morton 4291). - Hirsch-H. III, 146. - J. F. Heller (1813-1871), ein Schüler Liebigs und Wöhlers, richtete bereits 1844 ein pathologisch-chemisches Institut im Allgemeinen Krankenhaus in Wien ein. "Viele in der klinischen Harnuntersuchung noch jetzt geübte Reactionen, namentlich der Nachweis von Eiweiss mittelst Salpetersäure durch Unterschichtung im Spitzglase, ferner der Nachweis von Blutfarbstoff durch Fällen der Erdphosphate mittelst Kalilauge, führen noch derzeit den Namen H.'s, der sie zuerst anwandte" (H.-H.). - Vor Hellers Forschungen wurden Blasen- und Nierensteine (Harnkonkremente) von Ärzten meist rein makroskopisch (nach Form und Farbe) beurteilt. Heller übertrug die exakte chemische und mikroskopische Methodik auf dieses medizinische Problem. Er zeigte, wie man die genaue Zusammensetzung der Steine (z. B. Harnsäure, Oxalate oder Phosphate) im Labor exakt bestimmen kann. Heller begriff das Auftreten von Harnsteinen nicht als isoliertes chirurgisches Problem, sondern als Folge von Stoffwechselstörungen im gesamten Körper. Sein Buch bot Ärzten erstmals eine systematische Anleitung, um durch die chemische Analyse des Harns das Risiko einer Steinbildung frühzeitig zu erkennen (Nephrolithiasis-Diagnose). - Exlibris auf Innendeckel, etwas stockfleckig.
