Photographie - Moderne Photographie – Privatsammlung, Berlin. - Eines von 10 Exemplaren. - Die vorliegende Arbeit zeigt Nirjam Issah, dem Namen nach ein westafrikanischer Händler, in einem Außenlager in Hollywood, umgeben von traditionellen Holzschemeln und Tongefäßen sowie einem verwitterten, orangefarbenen VW-Bus vor einer hellblau gestrichenen Holzfassade. Der präzise, adressartige Titel ist charakteristisch für den Künstler: Indem er Ort, Datum und den vollständigen Namen der abgebildeten Person dokumentarisch fixiert, verleiht er dem Bild den Charakter eines Registers und verwebt Fragen von Identität, Migration und informeller Ökonomie mit den Konventionen fotografischer Archivierung. Das Nebeneinander von afrikanischem Kunsthandwerk und amerikanischer Suburban-Alltagswelt erzeugt dabei eine subtile Spannung, die weder exotisiert noch idealisiert. - Der in Köln lebende Fotograf und Konzeptkünstler Christopher Williams zählt zu den bedeutendsten konzeptuellen Fotografen seiner Generation.

This work depicts Nirjam Issah - a West African trader by name - in a storage facility in Hollywood, surrounded by traditional wooden stools and clay pots. The precise, address-like title is characteristic of the artist: by documenting the location, date and full name of the person depicted, he lends the image the character of a register and weaves questions of identity, migration and the informal economy into the conventions of photographic archiving. The juxtaposition of African handicrafts and everyday suburban American life creates a subtle tension that neither exoticises nor idealises.
