Britische Moderne – Doppio sogno nell'arte. 2RC tra artista e artefice, 262. - Lynton, G18. - Das vorliegende Blatt entfaltet seine kunsthistorische Wirkung aus einem doppelten Spannungsverhältnis: Es steht gleichzeitig in der langen europäischen Tradition des lyrischen Abstraktionismus und verweist weit über sie hinaus in Richtung einer fast ostasiatischen Bildphilosophie, in der das Zeichen wichtiger ist als das Bezeichnete. Pasmore selbst hatte postuliert, ein Bild solle als "unabhängiges Objekt eigener Art" und nicht als Abbild der Welt gelten - und dieses Blatt ist eine mustergültige Erfüllung dieses Programms: Die drei Formelemente (Punkt, Linie, Fläche) zitieren das Grundvokabular der Bauhauslehre, ohne es didaktisch auszustellen. Stattdessen werden sie mit einer Leichtigkeit inszeniert, die eher an Zen-Kalligrafie als an konstruktivistische Systematik erinnert - eine Brücke, die Pasmore nach seiner Übersiedlung nach Malta 1966 zunehmend bewusst schlug. Die Licht- und Farbwelt des Mittelmeers löste in seiner Malerei und Grafik die konstruktivistische Strenge seiner Mittelphase (die reliefartigen Wandtafeln, die geometrisch-rechtwinkeligen Abstraktionen der 1950er bis frühen 1960er) auf und öffnete sie für freifließende biomorphe Formen, spontan gesetzte Flecken und eine quasi-kalligrafische Leichtigkeit.

Lynton, G18. - Doppio sogno nell'arte. 2RC tra artista e artefice, 262. - This print derives its art-historical impact from a dual tension: It stands simultaneously within the long European tradition of lyrical abstractionism while pointing far beyond it toward an almost East Asian philosophy of imagery, in which the sign is more important than what it signifies. Pasmore himself had posited that a painting should be regarded as an "independent object of its own kind" and not as a representation of the world-and this work is an exemplary fulfillment of that program: The three formal elements (point, line, plane) draw on the basic vocabulary of Bauhaus theory without presenting it didactically. Instead, they are staged with a lightness that is more reminiscent of Zen calligraphy than of constructivist systematics-a bridge that Pasmore increasingly and consciously built after his move to Malta in 1966. The light and colors of the Mediterranean dissolved the constructivist rigor of his middle period (the relief-like wall panels, the geometric, right-angled abstractions of the 1950s through the early 1960s) in his paintings and drawings, opening them up to free-flowing biomorphic forms, spontaneously applied patches of color, and a quasi-calligraphic lightness.
