Jahrhundert. Der ironisch-bedrohliche Mappenttitel kontrastiert bewusst mit der Schwere der Bildthemen, ein für Tuymans typisches Verfahren der Verfremdung durch Banalität.

The images transform seemingly innocuous photographic sources into ghostly, more eerie versions of the original, thereby exploring notions of fading memory, power and its devastating consequences in the 20th century. The ironically menacing title of the portfolio deliberately contrasts with the gravity of the pictorial themes, a technique of alienation through banality typical of Tuymans.
