In the work "Blau," Oehlen revisits his so-called "tree paintings" from the 1980s-leafless, bare trees that dominate the pictorial space and, as a figurative starting point, invite explorations of pure abstraction. Shifting between clear contours and amorphous sharpness, Oehlen stages a dynamic interplay between abstraction and figuration. The paint, sometimes applied in rich layers, sometimes in experimental drips, sketches both the subject of the bare tree and the artist's gestural, informal style. Kept monochromatic in blue, a nuanced, powerful hue unfolds across the work.
