Billardspieler. 1923/24-1. Radierung auf Velin. 24,5 x 30,1 cm (40 cm x 56,7 cm). Signiert, betitelt und nummeriert. - Mit Griffspuren, vereinzelte, sehr leichte Knickspur, stellenweise ganz leicht unfrisch, Papier in seitlichen Außenrändern ganz leicht gewellt, am linken Außenrand kaum sichtbar gebräunt, verso Bleistiftannotationen, in Rändern blasse Farbspuren, stellenweise leicht unfrisch, insgesamt gut. Prachtvoller, ausgesprochen kräftiger und gratiger Druck mit leichtem und experimentell anmutenden Plattenton und klar zeichnender Plattenkante, mit breitem Rand, oben mit dem Schöpfrand.

S. 4. - Eines aus der kleinen Auflage von 12 Exemplaren. - Mit dem Stempel von Dr. Reinhard des Arts, Hamburg. - Nesch erlangt vor allem nach seiner Auswanderung 1933 nach Norwegen breitere Bekanntheit, nur wenige Drucke, insbesondere aus der frühen künstlerischen Schaffensphase sind lange Zeit einer breiten Öffentlichkeit unbekannt. Ein kleiner Personenkreis hält mit ihm zwischen Deutschland und Norwegen Kontakt, darunter Dr. Reinhard des Arts in Hamburg. Die Begegnung mit Neschs graphischen Werk zeugt von einer Dichte an künstlerischer Form in Verbindung mit einer reichen Imaginationskraft. Nesch als Graphiker ist besonders exprimentierfreudig, ätzt seine Druckplatten exzessiv. Er tritt in seinem formalen wie medialen Schaffen unverkennbar als Expressionist hervor. In "Billardspieler" aus dem Frühwerk zeigt sich seine expressive Herangehensweise, er setzt die bewegte Atmosphäre am Spieltisch in kraftvolle, reduzierte Linienkonturen und nutzt den experimentell behandelten Plattenton als wirkungsvollen Kontrast. Unser Blatt zählt zu einer Reihe an Arbeiten, die in die erste Schaffensphase in Deutschland noch vor der Emigration nach Norwegen fällt.

Signed, titled and numbered. - With handling marks, isolated, very slight crease mark, very slightly unfresh in spots, paper very slightly buckled in right and left outer margin, hardly browned in left outer margin, verso pencil annotations, faint colour traces in margins, slightly unfresh in spots, all in all good. Splendid, extremely rich and burr-like impression with delicate and experimental-like plate tone and clear drawn plate mark, with wide margin, deckle edge at top. - One of the small edition of 12 copies. - In: exhibition catalog Rolf Nesch/Oslo, Kestner-Gesellschaft e.V., Hanover, no. 8, illustrated on p. 4. - With stamp of Dr. Reinhard des Arts, Hamburg. - Nesch gained wider recognition primarily after his emigration to Norway in 1933, only a few prints particularly those from his early creative period remained unknown to the general public for a long time. A small circle of people maintained contact with him between Germany and Norway, including Dr. Reinhard des Arts in Hamburg. An encounter with Nesch's graphic work reveals a density of artistic form combined with a rich imagination. As a printmaker, Nesch was particularly eager to experiment, etching his printing plates to the extreme. In his work he unmistakably stands out as an Expressionist. In "Billardspieler", an early work, his expressive approach is evident: he captures the dynamic atmosphere at the billiards table with powerful, simplified line contours and uses the experimentally treated tone of the plate as an effective contrast. Our print is part of a series of works dating from Nesch's first creative phase in Germany, prior to his emigration to Norway.
