Magischer Realismus

Klassische Moderne – Privatsammlung, Baden-Württemberg. - Papiercollage aus Elementen historischer Druckgraphik, die Franz Roh zu einer surreal aufgeladenenen Komposition zusammenfügt: eine verschleierte Frauengestalt als Personifikation des belagerten Paris erhebt sich über der in Vogelperspektive angelegte Stadt, während eine Schlange als Symbol der preußischen Einkreisung den Himmel durchzieht. Parallel zu seiner Tätigkeit entwickelt der Künstler ab den 1920er Jahren sein collagistisches Werk im Kontext des magischen Realismus und dadaistischer Strömungen.

The print and the inset signature are mounted on a backing board and framed in a passe-partout. - Slightly rubbed in places along the edges. Overall in very good condition. - A paper collage composed of elements from historical prints, which Franz Roh has assembled into a composition imbued with a surreal atmosphere: a veiled female figure, personifying besieged Paris, rises above the city depicted from a bird's-eye view, whilst a snake-symbolising the Prussian encirclement-winds its way across the sky. In parallel with his other work, the artist developed his collage practice from the 1920s onwards within the context of magic realism and Dadaist movements.
