Rathaus von Zottelstedt. 1918. Holzschnitt auf Similijapan. 22,5 x 27,7 cm (31 x 41 cm). Signiert, betitelt und mit Trockenstempel. - Leicht braunfleckig in Rändern, Ecken ganz leicht knickspurig, Spuren ehemaliger Montierung von verso nach recto sehr leicht durchschlagend. Insgesamt gut.
Classical Modernism – Woodcut on Similijapan. Signed, titled and with dry stamp. - Slight brown stains in margins, corners very slightly crease-marked, traces of former mounting very slightly seeping through from verso onto recot. Overall very good. Superb, clear and contrast-rich impression with wide margin, deckle edge on one side. - One of 25 copies from the deluxe edition from the portfolio 'Die Schaffenden', Vol. 2, Portfolio 1 1920. - Publ. by Paul Westheim, Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag, Weimar 1920. - This work was created during a year in which Feininger devoted himself to the technique of woodcut printing and produced a large number of expressive landscape depictions. Inspired by a stay in Zottelstedt, Thuringia, in 1916, he created numerous depictions of the Seier Tower, which the artist mistakenly titled "Town Hall" and "Church." The medieval building is rendered here dynamically through bold, simplified lines and intense light-dark contrasts.
