Der deutsche Künstler, der bis dato rein gegenständlich malte, fand zu einer zunehmend abstrakten Ausdrucksform in dem Bestreben eines radikalen kulturellen, sozialen und künstlerischen Neuanfangs. Nach seiner Rückkehr aus dem Ersten Weltkrieg absolvierte Willi Baumeister 1920 sein Studium an der Kunstakademie in Stuttgart, einer Stadt, die neben Weimar, Frankfurt am Main und Berlin als eines der führenden Zentren der künstlerischen Moderne in Deutschland gilt. Das Schaffen des Künstlers der 1920er Jahre, in die auch die vorliegende Zeichnung fällt, steht exemplarisch für die kulturelle und künstlerische Neuorientierung seiner Zeit.

Following his return from the First World War, Willi Baumeister completed his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart in 1920, a city that, alongside Weimar, Frankfurt am Main, and Berlin, ranked among the leading centers of artistic modernism in Germany. The artist's work of the 1920s, to which the present drawing belongs, stands as a compelling example of the cultural and artistic reorientation of its time.
