Die Radierplatten entstanden in den Jahren 1931 bis 1939 im Auftrag des Kunsthändlers Ambroise Vollard, dessen Tod sowie die nachfolgenden Kriegswirren die Veröffentlichung bis 1956 verzögerten. Das vorliegende Blatt zeigt die biblische Szene aus Genesis XIX in der für Chagall typischen, tiefen und nuancenreichen Ausarbeitung der Radiernadel.

The etching plates were executed between 1931 and 1939 on behalf of the art dealer Ambroise Vollard, whose death and the subsequent disruptions of the war delayed publication until 1956. The present sheet depicts the biblical scene from Genesis XIX in Chagall's characteristic, deep and nuanced execution of the etching needle.
