Die drei eigenhändigen Kaltnadelradierungen - Max Jacob écrivant, Max Jacob de dos und Max Jacob de profil - entstanden an einem einzigen Septembertag des Jahres 1956 und sind von geradezu atemraubender Unmittelbarkeit: Picassos Kaltnadel gräbt sich mit bemerkenswerter Sicherheit in die Metallplatte, der volle, samtig-weiche Grat der Pointe-sèche gibt den Porträts eine Lebendigkeit und Wärme, die kein anderes druckgraphisches Verfahren hätte erzeugen können. Das lithographierte Frontispiz-Porträt von Max Jacob - in zarten, wie mit leichtester Hand hingehauchten Kreidelinien gezeichnet - steht diesen Radierungen in expressiver Kraft kaum nach und setzt dem Dichter ein Denkmal von klassischer Würde. Die großformatige Farblithographie des Umschlags empfängt den Betrachter mit jener souveränen dekorativen Geste, die Picasso allein beherrschte, und macht das Buch bereits von außen zu einem Kunstwerk. Der erfahrene Buchholzschneider Georges Aubert hat die spontane Linienenergie der 24 Picasso Zeichnungen mit bemerkenswerter Meisterschaft auf den Holzstock übertragen. Wohlerhalten.

The etchings are in magnificent, rich prints with full burins, the lithographs are in clear, sharp prints (belle épreuve), faithfully rendering Picasso's delicate chalk lines. The woodcuts are each in excellent, strong, and even prints with deep, rich blacks and a precise reproduction of Picasso's characteristic linework. Each on Vergé-de-Montval handmade paper. The three hand-engraved drypoint etchings-Max Jacob écrivant, Max Jacob de dos, and Max Jacob de profil-were created on a single day in September 1956 and possess a breathtaking immediacy: Picasso's drypoint burrows into the metal plate with remarkable precision, the full, velvety-soft ridge of the pointe-sèche lends the portraits a vitality and warmth that no other printmaking technique could have produced. The lithographed frontispiece portrait of Max Jacob-drawn in delicate chalk lines, as if breathed onto the page with the lightest of hands-is hardly inferior to these etchings in expressive power and erects a monument of classical dignity to the poet. The large-format color lithograph on the cover greets the viewer with that masterful decorative gesture that only Picasso could command, transforming the book into a work of art even from the outside. The experienced wood engraver Georges Aubert has transferred the spontaneous linear energy of the 24 Picasso drawings to the woodblock with remarkable mastery. In good condition.
