Lot 244 Pablo Picasso. 22 Graphiken. Je Holzschnitt …

22 Graphiken. Je Holzschnitt nach Originalzeichnungen von Pablo Picasso, in: Hélène chez Archimède. Paris, Nouveaa Cercle Parisien du Livre, 1955. In Umschlag, in Pappdecke und Pappschuber. - Sehr gut erhalten.

Klassische Moderne – Monod 10485. - Horodisch 322. - Johnson 162, Nr. 193. - Strachan 340.

Classical Modernism – 22 works. Each woodcut (engraved by Georges Aubert) after original drawings by Pablo Picasso. In board, in cardboard cover and cardboard slipcase. - Very good condition. - One of 240 copies, of which only 100 Roman numbered copies were sold. - Printed by Fequet and Baudier at the instigation of Ambroise Vollard. One of 240 copies, of which only 100 Roman-numbered copies were made available for sale. - The print was produced at the request of Ambroise Vollard by Fequet and Baudier. The 22 woodcuts-20 of which are full-page-were not carved into the block by Picasso himself, but were transferred to wood by the specialist engraver Georges Aubert based on Picasso's drawings, placing the work within the venerable tradition of "reproduction gravée" while simultaneously raising the question of originality in the context of book art. Iconographically, the prints are rooted in the creative energy of Picasso's neoclassical phase of the early 1920s: The figures-oscillating between Helen and Archimedes-combine Ingres-like clarity of line with Cubist fragmentation and reflect Picasso's lifelong engagement with ancient mythology as a canvas for Eros, reason, and the body.
