Portrait de famille. 1962. Lithographie auf Arches-Velin (m.Wz.). 49,5 x 64,7 cm (56 x 76 cm) Signiert mit Farbstift in Rot. Punktuell auf Passepartoutrückseite montiert. - Leicht unregelmäßig gebräunt, oben mittig links und unten mittig links in äußerster Kante kleiner, blassbrauner Fleck, oben und unten mittig leichte Knickspur, am linken Rand mittig kleiner Einriss (ca. 0,9 cm), vereinzelt leichte Griffspur, verso vereinzelter blassbrauner oder -schwarzer Fleck, in unteren Ecken kleine Montierungsreste, insgesamt sehr gut. Prachtvoller, kräftiger und herrlich kreidiger Druck mit Rand, oben und unten mit dem Schöpfrand.

Bloch 1029. - Bisher sind leiglich 9 Exemplare bekannt, unseres eines der sehr seltenen signierten Abzüge. - Blatt 1 aus der 6-teiligen Folge. - In Mougins bei Cannes schafft Picasso zwischen dem 21. Juni und dem 6. Juli 1962 eine Reihe von Lithographien und Linolschnitten zu dem Thema "Portrait de Famille". Seine wiederholte Bearbeitung der Komposition zeigt, wie sehr ihn die Thematik beschäftigt. Als Inspiration dient eine Zeichnung der Familie Forestier von Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres von 1806, die Picasso aus dem Louvre kannte. Sein Blatt zeigt Ingres' Verlobte Julie Forestier mit ihren beiden Eltern. Picasso positioniert die Figuren in seinem Druck radikal neu und erfindet eine ganz andere Erzählung. Während Ingres seine Verlobte in die Mitte des Bildes stellt, wo sie zu beiden Seiten von ihren sitzenden Eltern flankiert wird, bringt Picasso das ältere Paar in diese zentrale Position, während die junge Frau am rechten Bildrand in die Dunkelheit links im Bild schaut. Ingres als schöpferische Quelle nehmend, folgt er seinem Leitsatz, ein guter Künstler kopiert, ein sehr guter stiehlt.

Classical Modernism – Lithograph on Arches wove paper (with watermark). Signed with colour pencil in red. Spot-mounted to mat's back. - Slightly irregularly browned, on upper middle left and lower middle in outermost edge small, faint-brown stain, slight crease mark at upper and lower middle, small marginal tear on left (ca. 0.9 cm), isolated slight handling traces, verso isolated faint-brown or -black stain, small traces of mounting in lower corners, all in all very good. Splendid, rich and wonderfully chalk-like impression with margin, deckle edge at top and bottom. - Only 9 copies are known, ours one of the very rare signed copies. - Sheet 1 from the 6-parted series. - In Mougins, near Cannes, Picasso creates a series of lithographs and linocuts on the theme of "Portrait de Famille" between June 21 and July 6, 1962. His repeated reworking of the composition shows just how deeply the subject matter preoccupied him. His inspiration was a 1806 drawing of the Forestier family by Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres which Picasso had seen at the Louvre. Ingres's drawing depicts his fiancée, Julie Forestier, with her parents. In his print, Picasso radically repositioned the figures and invented an entirely different narrative. While Ingres places his fiancée in the center of the image, flanked on both sides by her seated parents, Picasso places the older couple in this central position while the young woman at the right edge of the image gazes into the darkness on the left. Taking Ingres as his creative source, he follows his guiding principle: a good artist copies, a great artist steals.
