Klassische Moderne – Pfeiffer studiert Mitte der 1920er Jahre am Bauhaus in Weimar und wird später Schüler von Wassily Kandinsky und Paul Klee in Dessau. Schon früh entwickelt der deutsche Künstler ein Interesse für die chemische Zusammensetzung von Pigmenten und setzt sich später intensiv mit der Farbenlehre auseinander. In den 1950er Jahren veröffentlicht er hierzu das Werk "L'harmonie des Couleurs. Cours Théorique et Pratique" und beschränkt sich in seinem künstlerischen Schaffen fast ausschließlich auf das Medium des Aquarells. Die vorliegende Arbeit auf Leinwand steht charakteristisch für sein OEuvre, welches die harmonische Anordnung von Farben auf dem Bildträger untersucht.
