Mutter mit Kind (stillend). 1915. Mischtechnik mit Aquarell, Gouache und Bleistift auf braunem Velin. 39,6 x 20,9 cm. Monogrammiert und datiert. In den oberen Ecken im Passepartout montiert. - Ecke unten links leicht geknickt. Oben sowie unten (unter dem Passepartout) minimale Einstichlöcher. Kleiner Einriss oben mittig. Insgesamt sehr gut. Prachtvolle, eindringliche Darstellung von großer Intimität.

Jahrhundertwende – Das Werk zeigt eine intime, beinahe zurückgenommene Szene von Mutter und Kind und steht damit in der Tradition einer sensibel beobachteten, familiären Motivik. Gerade diese Privatheit steht jedoch in einem Spannungsverhältnis zur Biografie des Künstlers Walter Ruckteschell, der im Kontext des deutschen Kolonialismus tätig war und dessen Werk im heutigen Diskurs entsprechend zu kontextualisieren ist. Ruckteschell reiste im Frühjahr 1914 nach Deutsch-Ostafrika (heute Tansania), zunächst zu Studienzwecken. Mit Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkriegs war eine Rückkehr nach Europa nicht mehr möglich, und er schloss sich der kaiserlichen Schutztruppe an. Trotz dieser historischen Einbindung ist die Darstellung von einer bemerkenswerten Unmittelbarkeit und Empathie geprägt. Die Szene vermeidet jede vordergründige Exotisierung und gewinnt gerade durch ihre ruhige, konzentrierte Bildsprache eine zeitlose, menschlich berührende Qualität.

Fin de Siecle – Mixed media with watercolour, gouache and pencil on brown wove paper. Monogrammed and dated. Mounted in a passe-partout at the upper corners. - Lower left corner slightly creased. Small pinholes at the top and bottom (beneath the passe-partout). Small tear at the upper centre. Overall in very good condition. A splendid, evocative depiction of great intimacy. - The work depicts an intimate, almost restrained scene of a mother and child, continuing a tradition of sensitively observed, domestic subject matter. This sense of privacy, however, stands in contrast to the biography of the artist Walter Ruckteschell, who was active within the context of German colonialism and whose work must therefore be contextualised within today's critical discourse. Ruckteschell travelled to German East Africa (present-day Tanzania) in spring 1914, initially for study purposes. With the outbreak of the First World War, a return to Europe was no longer possible, and he joined the Imperial Schutztruppe. Despite this historical embedding, the depiction is characterised by a remarkable immediacy and sense of empathy. The scene avoids any overt exoticisation and gains, through its calm and focused pictorial language, a timeless and deeply moving human quality.
