Jahrhundertwende – Das Werk zeigt eine Szene im Sinne der traditionellen europäischen Ikonographie der Madonna mit Kind und Josef. Ruckteschell verlagert die vertraute Bildformel in einen außereuropäischen Kontext. Das Kind ist durch einen leuchtend blauen Nimbus eindeutig als göttliche Figur gekennzeichnet. Die Mutter erscheint im klassischen rot-blauen Mariengewand. Ihr zur Seite ist eine männliche Figur gesetzt, die als Josef lesbar ist und als zurückhaltender, begleitender Beobachter der Szene charakterisiert wird. Das Werk entstand im ostafrikanischen Kontext der Jahre 1914-1916 und überträgt die europäisch-christliche Bildtradition in eine konzentrierte, formal verdichtete Bildsprache. Diese bewusste Verschiebung etablierter ikonographischer Muster in einen anderen kulturellen Raum verleiht der Darstellung eine gewisse Spannung. Trotz der historischen Einbindung in einen kolonial geprägten Entstehungskontext ist die Szene von großer Unmittelbarkeit sowie innerer Ruhe geprägt und entfaltet durch ihre verdichtete Komposition eine intime Bildwirkung.

Fin de Siecle – Mixed media with watercolour, pencil and gouache on brown wove paper. Approx. Monogrammed and dated. Verso with estate stamp. In frame (unopened). - Due to the material slightly wavy. Light creases in the lower corners. Minimal pinholes in the corners. Overall in very good condition. A splendid work with rich, saturated colours. - The work depicts a scene in the tradition of the European iconography of the Madonna with Child and Joseph. Ruckteschell transfers this familiar visual formula into a non-European context. The Child is clearly identified as a divine figure through a luminous blue halo. The Mother appears in the classical red-and-blue garment of the Virgin Mary. Beside her is a male figure, identifiable as Joseph, characterised as a reserved, accompanying observer of the scene. The work was created in the East African context of the years 1914-1916 and translates the European Christian pictorial tradition into a concentrated, formally condensed visual language. This deliberate shift of established iconographic patterns into another cultural space lends the depiction a certain tension. Despite its historical embedding in a colonial context, the scene is marked by a strong immediacy and inner calm, unfolding an intimate pictorial effect through its condensed composition.
