Geologie - Mineralogie

Naturwissenschaften – Roller-G. II, 421 - DSB XII, 261 ff - Poggendorff II, 882 f - Zweite, wesentlich erweiterte Ausgabe von "Memoir on the geology of Central France" (1826), einem der einflussreichen geologischen Hauptwerke Scropes. - Gutes Exemplar.

Natural Sciences – Geology - Mineralogy. - With 17 plates and two colored geological maps. Contemporary green smoothed goatskin binding with gold-stamped spine and leather corners. (Slightly rubbed). Second, substantially expanded edition of "Memoir on the Geology of Central France" (1826), one of Scrope's most influential major geological works. Comprehensive study of the geology of the French Massif Central and the extinct volcanoes of Auvergne, Velay, and Vivarais. The book describes the sequence of volcanic rocks and sediments, the forms of cinder cones, lava flows, and maars, as well as the deeply incised valleys where the stratigraphic sequences are particularly well exposed, and serves as a sort of geological guidebook leading the reader through the landscape. Characteristic are the numerous maps, panoramas, and cross-sections in which Scrope depicts basalt column complexes, valleys, and stratigraphy with great precision to support his interpretation of the volcanic history of the Massif Central. The work is part of his efforts to promote a plutonic-volcanic view of Earth's history in opposition to Neptunist concepts, and became a fundamental reference text for early volcanology and stratigraphy in Europe. - A fine copy.
