Der erste Teil, die Lithologie, "traite des pierres" und bietet eine systematische Darstellung von Steinen und Mineralien, während der zweite Teil, die Conchyliologie, die "coquillages" von Meer, Flüssen und Land behandelt und damit eine frühe, gelehrte Muschelkunde entwirft. Das Werk richtet sich an Gelehrte und Sammler, ordnet die damals bekannten Steine und Schalen in übersichtliche Gruppen und verbindet eine neue, zweisprachige Klassifikationsmethode mit praktischen Hinweisen für das Anlegen eines Kabinetts. Es bildet die Ausgangsbasis für die später voneinander getrennt publizierten, überarbeiteten Bände Oryctologie und Conchyliologie und markiert damit einen wichtigen Schritt in der frühen Systematisierung von Mineralogie und Conchologie im 18.
