Emblemata

Vgl. Green, Alciati, p. 132. "The devices are an exact copy of the woodcuts in another edition of Alciat's emblems, that by Plantin, 1581, but the borders are not the same (und siehe dort) ... The monogram A, assigned by some to Assuerus Van Londerzeel .... but speaking of the 1581 edition the monogram A my be for Adam van Oort." - Fehlen 16 nn. Bl. der Einleitung (Lobgedichte, Episteln, Biographie d. Verf. u.a.) Vorderer fliegender Vorsatz mit hs. Besitzereintrag, im Zuge der Bindung im 19. Jh. neu aufgezogen. Zahlreiche Fehlpaginierungen.

Prints before 1600, Bibles, Classics in Original Languages – Richly illustrated Paris edition of Alciato's famous book of emblems. - Landwehr 90, 91 or 92. - With attractive title woodcut by Jan de Weert. The publisher's details and date on the title page have been removed, which is why our copy cannot be clearly dated, as the 1601, 1602 and 1608 editions have identical collation and the same title wood-cut. - Present emblematic wood-cuts, framed by borders, are taken from the first edition with comments by Claude Mignault printed by Platin, 1581 (Adams I, 608). Cf. Green, Alciati, p. 132. 'The devices are an exact copy of the woodcuts in another edition of Alciat's emblems, that by Plantin, 1581, but the borders are not the same (and see there) ... The monogram A, assigned by some to Assuerus Van Londerzeel .... but speaking of the 1581 edition, the monogram A may be for Adam van Oort.' - 16 unnumbered leaves of the introduction (praise poems, epistles, biography of the author, etc.) are missing. Front fly-leaf with handwritten owner's inscription, re-mounted during binding in the 19th century. Numerous mispagination. First leaves and sheets NNn to RRr on the outer edge water-stained, title page and margins slightly finger-stained and foxy in places, otherwise a solidly preserved copy.
