Avantgarde - Bulgarien

Modern Literature and Art – First edition of this exceptionally designed volume of Bulgarian avant-garde poetry, cover and text strikingly designed with wood-cuts by Khristo Bagrov. - For references see above. - A visually stunning edition, and simultaneously the first book publication of the renowned poet, prose writer, and editor Lyubomir Doychev (1909-91). Doychev spent his youth in Yambol, which in the 1920s was a center of activity for the Futurist-influenced group around Kiril Krastev and the publishing location of the magazine "Crescendo" (1923/24). In 1932, Doychev published the journal "Stozher" in Sofia, which, alongside the periodicals "Novis" and "Ugari," was the most progressive, and primarily Constructivist-oriented, periodical of the second wave of Bulgarian modernism in the early 1930s. - The elaborate and impressive design of this small volume is by Khristo Bagrov, who also provided illustrations for "Stozher." It is particularly noteworthy that each individual page has a different typographic layout, largely illustrated by wood-cuts. In addition to geometric design elements typical of constructivist aesthetics, there are also expressionistic portraits of Cervantes, Dante, Jesus, Lermontov, and Moses, as well as photographs of the author, the designer, and the author's deceased sister, to whom this book, along with a lyrical "Requiem," is dedicated. - Paper browned, otherwise a well-preserved copy. - Of great rarity. We have only been able to trace a copy in the Bulgarian National Library in Sofia and the H. & H. R. collection. According to OCLC/WorldCat and KVK no other copy worldwide.
