Skulptur

Gemälde, Zeichnungen u. Grafiken 16. bis 19. Jhd. – Privatsammlung, Berlin. - Partiell minimal angestaubt. Insgesamt sehr gut.

Paintings, drawings and prints 16th to 19th century – Black patinated bronze. 48 x 40 x 20 cm. The base bears the signature stamp and the foundry stamp. Partially dusty in places. Overall very good condition. - Private collection, Berlin. - Bronze sculpture by Louis Tuaillon, one of the most significant depictions of animals and heroes in German sculpture around 1900. The work depicts the fourth of Hercules' twelve labours: the capture of the wild boar of Mount Erymanthus, which the hero was tasked with capturing alive. Stylistically, the group combines a clear, classical conception of form with a modern reduction of expression. Tuaillon, who was trained in Reinhold Begas's circle, deliberately turned away from Begas's dramatic historicism and sought a calmer, more austere monumentality. The compact silhouette and tectonic unity of the figures refer to this classicist reorientation of Berlin sculpture around 1900. The present bronze forms the artistic starting point for the monumental version later erected on Lützowplatz in Berlin. In urban space, the sculpture unfolds its exemplary effect as a symbol of human strength and self-control. At the same time, it stands for Tuaillon's lasting contribution to the renewal of German large-scale sculpture on the threshold of modernism.
