Februar 2022, Los 101. - Die großformatige Stoffmalerei aus dem Jahr 1918 ist der frühen Schaffensphase von Ismaël de la Serna zuzuordnen und entstand noch vor seiner Übersiedlung nach Paris im Jahr 1921. Sie dokumentiert eindrucksvoll seine Ausbildung im Umfeld der spanischen Maltradition und deren Orientierung an klassischen Vorbildern. Dargestellt ist eine Mondsichelmadonna, umgeben von Putti sowie ikonographischen Attributen, die auf ihre religiöse Bedeutung verweisen. Die weich modellierte Figurenauffassung, die gedämpfte, tonige Farbigkeit sowie die insgesamt harmonisch zurückgenommene Komposition verleihen der Darstellung eine stille, beinahe kontemplative Wirkung. Zugleich weist das Werk bereits über die akademische Tradition hinaus. Die zunehmend freiere Behandlung von Form und Farbe sowie die Wahl des ungewöhnlichen Bildträgers eines samtenen Stoffes, dessen spezifische Materialität subtil in die malerische Wirkung einbezogen wird, verweisen auf eine beginnende Lockerung der akademischen Strenge und eine Hinwendung zu einer moderneren, eigenständigeren Bildauffassung mit Elementen des Jugendstils. - Bemalte Borte an den Kanten mit punktuellen Löchlein, technikbedingt partiell berieben. Insgesamt sehr gut.

Painted border along the edges with small dotted holes, partially worn due to the technique used. Overall in very good condition. - This large-scale fabric painting, dating from 1918, belongs to the early phase of Ismaël de la Serna's career and was created before he moved to Paris in 1921. It provides a striking illustration of his training within the Spanish painting tradition and its focus on classical models. Depicted is a Madonna of the Crescent Moon, surrounded by cherubs and iconographic attributes that refer to her religious significance. The softly modelled figures, the subdued, earthy colour palette and the overall harmoniously restrained composition lend the work a quiet, almost contemplative effect. At the same time, the work already points beyond the academic tradition. The increasingly free treatment of form and color, as well as the choice of an unusual support-a velvet fabric whose specific materiality is subtly incorporated into the painterly effect-point to a beginning shift away from academic rigor and a turn toward a more modern, independent conception of the image, incorporating Art Nouveau elements.
