Landschaften - Deutschland
Gemälde, Zeichnungen u. Grafiken 16. bis 19. Jhd.
Paintings, drawings and prints 16th to 19th century – Ink and chalk on sturdy wove paper. Signed, dated and with an illegible note. Mounted under a passe-partout on backing and framed under glass in a gold-coloured frame. - Sheet slightly browned and with subtle brown spots, as well as fine crease marks on the left edge, minimal holes from previous mounting on the corners and two slight tears on the lower edge. Overall in good condition. - The pen and ink drawing is one of several preliminary studies for the oil painting 'Evening Landscape', which Thoma completed in 1879. The sketch already hints at the shepherd and his flock of sheep, which were later realised, on the right-hand side. The sky would later take up much more space in the painted picture, making the hilly landscape on the horizon appear flatter. The landscape painter had a close relationship with Wilhelm Leibl and Arnold Böcklin. Their influence can also be seen in the painting 'Evening Landscape' in the atmospheric lighting and warm colours.
