Madagaskar
Photography – Madagascar. - Album with 47 photographs on Aristotype paper. Vintages. Silver gelatin. Circa 1890-1910. - An impressive album of various Madagascan ethnic group photographs (Merina, Betsileo, Sakalava, Betsimisaraka) featuring striking clothing, hairstyles, ear discs, and metal chains. Some of the photos also feature an interesting combination of colonial and missionary-inspired fashion. This combination was widespread in the central regions of Madagascar at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th centuries and is considered a hallmark of a society in transition, where Christianity, colonial administration, and local traditions collided. The accessories-umbrellas, wide straw hats, fringed scarves-also look like carefully selected props from a photo studio, in which the subjects wanted to appear both modern and respectable without denying their origins. - Also shows the war memorial in Tananarive. - The photos are well preserved.
