Photographie - Photographen – Historisch bedeutendes Photoalbum und zugehörige Handschrift über Madagaskar aus der Frühzeit der französischen Kolonialherrschaft. - Zusammengestellt von einem französischen Offizier illustrieren und beschreiben Album und Aufzeichnungen die ersten Jahre der Insel als französisches Protektorat (1895) und Kolonie (ab 1896). - Mit 57 montierten Silbergelatineabzügen in verschiedenen Größen, darunter fünf große Bilder ca. 19 x 26 cm (7 x 10 Zoll Zoll) und zweiundfünfzig kleineren, von ca. 11,5 x 6 cm (4 x 6 Zoll) bis ca. 8,5 x 11 cm (3 x 4 Zoll), mit einem Foto eines Franzosen in Kolonialuniform, möglicherweise der Zusammensteller des Albums, das lose beiliegt (ca. 17 x 10,5 cm, 6 x 4 Zoll). - Die allermeisten Photos mit handschriftlichen französischen Legenden unterhalb auf den Einlagen. - Das Album beginnt mit Porträts der madagassischen Königsfamilie und Regierung: der ehemaligen Königin Ranavalona III. (1897 entthront und ins Exil geschickt) und ihrem Ehemann, dem ehemaligen Premierminister Madagaskars Rainilaiarivony u.a. - Vier Fotos zeigen die Hinrichtung "de deux ministres" vor der Ankunft von General Joseph Simon Gallieni, dem Militärgouverneur von Madagaskar von 1896 bis 1905. - Mit zahlreichen Ansichten von Antananarivo, die den Königspalast, das hölzerne "Silberhaus" (oder Tranovola), den Andafiavaratra-Palast (Palast des Premierministers), die Kathedrale von Antananarivo, den Andohalo-Platz u.a. zeigen. Andere Städte und Sehenswürdigkeiten im Zentrum Madagaskars sind u.a. in den Ansichten der Königsstadt Ambohimanga, Andriba, Fianarantsoa, Fihaonana, Gebäude der Goldminengesellschaft in Maevatanana sowie Andriamamovoka und Ambavaloza-Wasserfälle vertreten. Weitere Photos mit Madagassen zeigen Porträts von Hova-Frauen und -Kindern, Betsileo-Frauen, ein großes Porträt einer Sakalava-Frau aus Menabe, Verkäufer und Besucher eines madagassischen Marktes, Frauen beim Sticken und Weben, Arbeiter auf Reisplantagen, eine Gruppe Tanzender, und andere. Das Album schließt mit einer Ansicht der französischen Militärlagerhäuser in der Küstenstadt Mahajanga und einem Gruppenporträt, das eine "Siesta der 5. Kompanie der Artilleriearbeiter" zeigt (verblasst). - Der Bericht in einem linierten Oktavheft mit lithogr. Umschl. betitelt: "Notes et impressions. Tananarive à Majunga. 1898", Titelseite und 25 Seiten französischer Text mit schwarzer Feder sauber kalligraphiert und mit Fußnoten versehen. - Das Manuskript beginnt mit der Beschreibung von Antananarivo und fährt mit dem Bericht über die Reisen des Autors in eine Reihe von Städten und Dörfern Madagaskars fort: Ambohidratimo, Ambouhitromby, Manaukago, Ambonim.ni, Manerinerina, Mahatsinjo, Andriba, M.v.tanana, Suberbieville, Morololo, Amboto, Akaladiu, Morovoay, Ambougniou, Mahajanga usw. Der Autor macht interessante Anmerkungen zur Schönheit der Natur und der Städte, zum täglichen Leben der Einheimischen usw. - Einige der Photos meist in den Rändern teils ausgesilbert, die Einlageblätter gewellt, stellenweise angestaubt und mitunter etwas fleckig. Insgesamt gut erhaltenes Album, eine sehr aufschlussreiche und historisch bedeutsame Quelle zur Frühgeschichte der französischen Herrschaft in Madagaskar.

Photography – Historically significant photo album and accompanying manuscript about Madagascar from the early days of French colonial rule. - Compiled by a French officer, the album and notes illustrate the island's early years as a French protectorate (1895) and colony (from 1896). - With 57 mounted silver gelatine prints in various sizes, including five large images approx. 19 x 26 cm (7 x 10 inches) and 52 smaller ones, ranging from approx. 11.5 x 6 cm (4 x 6 inches) to approx. 8.5 x 11 cm (3 x 4 inches). With a photograph of a Frenchman in colonial uniform, possibly the compiler of the album, loosely enclosed (approx. 17 x 10.5 cm, 6 x 4 inches). - The vast majority of photos have handwritten French captions below them on the inserts. - The album begins with portraits of the Madagascan royal family and government: the former Queen Ranavalona III (dethroned and sent into exile in 1897) and her husband, the former Prime Minister of Madagascar Rainilaiarivony, among others. - Four photos show the execution of 'de deux ministres' before the arrival of General Joseph Simon Gallieni, the military governor of Madagascar from 1896 to 1905. - With numerous views of Antananarivo, showing the Royal Palace, the wooden 'Silver House' (or Tranovola), the Andafiavaratra Palace (Prime Minister's Palace), Antananarivo Cathedral, Andohalo Square and more. Other cities and sights in central Madagascar are represented in the views of the royal city of Ambohimanga, Andriba, Fianarantsoa, Fihaonana, buildings of the gold mining company in Maevatanana, and Andriamamovoka and Ambavaloza waterfalls. Further photos featuring Madagascans include portraits of Hova women and children, Betsileo women, a large portrait of a Sakalava woman from Menabe, vendors and visitors at a Madagascan market, women embroidering and weaving, workers on rice plantations, a group of dancers, and others. The album concludes with a view of the French military warehouses in the coastal town of Mahajanga and a group portrait showing French soldiers (faded). - The written account in a lined octavo booklet with lithographed cover is titled: "Notes et impressions. Tananarive à Majunga. 1898" title page and 25 pages of French text neatly calligraphed in black pen and annotated with footnotes. - The manuscript begins with a description of Antananarivo and continues with an account of the author's travels to a number of towns and villages in Madagascar: Ambohidratimo, Ambouhitromby, Manaukago, Ambonim.ni, Manerinerina, Mahatsinjo, Andriba, M.v.tanana, Suberbieville, Morololo, Amboto, Akaladiu, Morovoay, Ambougniou, Mahajanga, etc. The author makes interesting comments on the beauty of nature and the cities, the daily life of the locals, etc. - Some of the photos are partially silvered at the edges, the insert sheets are wavy, dusty in places and occasionally slightly stained. Overall, a well-preserved album and a very informative and historically significant source on the early history of French rule in Madagascar.
