Zwei große Alben mit 97 (von 100), meist querformatigen, montierten und auf den Trägerkartons handschriftlich nummerierten originalen Albumin-Abzügen, je mit Legendenverzeichnis. Ca. 1880-1890. 49 und 48 Kartonblätter. Quer-4° (25 x 37 cm, Album) bzw. 12 x 16 cm (Photos). HLdr. mit Ecken und Vorsätzen aus Steinmarmorpapier (Ecken und Kanten bestoßen, etw. berieben, die Decken teils mit kleinen Bezugsfehlstellen und fleckig).

Photographie - Photographen – Seltene Alben mit den wohl ältesten photographischen Dokumenten aus dem Französischen Sudan. - Die Fotos des Pariser Ateliers Moreau Frères (unter diesem Namen von 1886 bis 1908) mit architektonischen Details von Städten sowie Landschaften in Mali und Guinea (u.a. Medine, Segou, Koniakary, Moro, Diena, Kayes, Felou, der Niger-Fluß und Kankan), weiters topographischen Ansichten von neuen Gebäuden im europäischen Stil, afrikanische Dörfer und Gebäude (darunter zwei Ansichten von Bambara mit Eisenverarbeitung). Ca. 20 Fotos zeigen Gruppen und Personen, sowohl Europäer, als auch Afrikaner. - Provenienz: Gustave Borgnis-Desbordes (1839-1900), General, Kommandant des Französischen Militärterritoriums Obersenegal und oberster Kolonialbeamter von Mali zwischen 1880 und 1883, mit einer handschriftlichen Widmung an diesen von einer für uns nicht identifizierbaren Person auf beiden Innendeckeln. Borgnis-Desbordes unternahm eine Reihe von topographischen Expeditionen in der Region, welche auch die Trassierung einer Eisenbahn zum Ziel hatten. - Beiliegend 10 thematisch zugehörige Photos in verschiedenen Größen, u.a. mit einem Porträt von Tieba Traoré, König des Kénédougou Reiches von 1876 bis 1893. - Fehlen die Photos Nrn. 12 (Medine, Einlageblatt vorhanden), 88 (1 v. 11 Abbildungen von Moro) und 97 (1 v. 3 Abbildungen von Diena). - Die Abzüge stellenweise an den Rändern stellenweise leicht ausgesilbert, verblasst und mitunter mit meist geringer Bräunung. Insgesamt wohlerhaltene Alben mit einer einzigartigen, historisch bedeutenden Dokumentation.

Photography – 2 rare albums containing 97 (of 100) what are probably the oldest photographic documents from French Sudan. - Original albumen prints, mostly landscape-format, mounted and numbered by hand on the backing boards, each with a list of captions at the end. Circa 1880-1890. 49 and 48 cardboard sheets. Landscape 4° (25 x 37 cm, album) and 12 x 16 cm (photos). Half leather albums with and endpapers of stone marble paperd (corners and edges bumped, somewhat rubbed, covers partly with small areas of missing material and stained). - The photographs from the Paris studio Moreau Frères (under this name from 1886 to 1908) show architectural details of cities and landscapes in Mali and Guinea (including Medine, Segou, Koniakary, Moro, Diena, Kayes, Felou, the Niger River and Kankan), as well as topographical views of new European-style buildings, African villages and buildings (including two views of Bambara with an ironworking plant). Approximately 20 photos show groups as well as individuals, both European and African. - Provenance: Gustave Borgnis-Desbordes (1839-1900), general, commander of the French military territory of Upper Senegal and chief colonial officer of Mali between 1880 and 1883, with a handwritten dedication to him from a person we cannot identify on both paste-downs. Borgnis-Desbordes undertook a series of topographical expeditions in the region, which also had the aim of laying out a railway line. - Enclosed are 10 thematically related photos in various sizes, including a portrait of Tieba Traoré, King of the Kénédougou Empire from 1876 to 1893. - Missing photos numbered 12 (Médine, ), 88 (1 of 11 illustrations of Moro) and 97 (1 of 3 illustrations of Diena). - The photos are slightly silvered in places at the edges, some are slightly faded and occasionally with mostly minor browning. - Overall, well-preserved albums with unique, historically significant documentation.
