Und: 14 Einlagebogen gestrichenen Papiers, handschriftlich betitelt "Dahomey - Lagos Sénégal - Soudan" und montiertem Titelbild (König von Dahomey), mit 61 zumeist einseitig in Schlitzen eingeschobenen oder eingeklebten Original-Silbergelatineabzüge) auf verschiedenen Papieren, alle mit handschriftlichen, meist datierten Legenden in Bleistift oder Tinte unter den Einlagen oder verso. Ca. 1902-1903, 1908. 8°. OHLn. die Vorderumschläge je betitelt "Dahomey" und mit montiertem Monogramm "J L", die Rücken nummiert mit "A" und "B" und 2° (Bogen) mit Photos: 13 x 18 cm - 7,5 x 11,5 cm (berieben, der Titelbogen etw. fleckig).

Photographie - Photographen – Unikale Sammlung von zwei Notizbüchern samt Ephemera, beinhaltend Berichte über Aufenthalt, Arbeit und Reisen im heutigen Benin, v.a. Porto-Novo und Abomey, sowie Lagos (Nigeria), dazu seltene Photographien, auch aus dem heutigen Mali. - Aus dem Nachlass von Dr. Jean Logerais, der Anfang des 20. Jh. als oberster Gesundheitsbeamter in Porto-Novo (seit 1894 Hauptstadt des französischen Dahomey (Benin) tätig war. - Die Notizbücher mit in den 1910er-Jahren angefertigen Kopien von 36 zwischen 1902 und 1903 in Porto-Novo and Cotonou verfassten Briefen von Logerais' Frau Juliette an ihre Mutter, hauptsächlich mit anschaulichen Beschreibungen des medizinischen Dienstes in Dahomey und dem Leben der dort lebenden französischen Oberschicht. - Der Haupttext ist gelegentlich mit Tuschzeichnungen illustriert und umfänglich ergänzt durch eingeklebte bzw. beiliegende handschriftliche oder gedruckte Ephemera, z.B. ein handgezeichneter Plan von Porto Novo mit dem Krankenhaus, drei umfangreiche Manuskriptberichte von Jean Logerais über Feierlichkeiten zum französischen Nationalfeiertag am 14. Juli 1902 in Porto Novo, eine Reise nach Lagos (Dezember 1902), eine weitere Reise nach Abomey und in die Region Dan in Dahomey (März 1903), weiters einer Liste der Todesfälle französischer Einwohner in Dahomey (1902-1918) und eine chromolithografierte Postkarte "Souvenir de Dahomé". - Die 61 Photos (15 in der Größe von ca. 13 x 18 cm, 10 mit ca. 12 x 17 cm, 9 mit ca. 9 x 12 cm, und 27 mit ca. 7,5 x 11,5 cm) mit Ansichten von und Gebäuden bzw. Szenen in Porto-Novo und Cotonou, u.a. die Lagune, den Markt, ein traditionelles Haus mit Schnitzwerk, weiters ein Gruppenporträt mit König Toffa I. (ca. 1850-1908) und dem Ehepaar Logerais, Porträts von einheimischen Mädchen und Frauen, Hochzeitsgesellschaften usw. Fünf der Fotos, während einer Reise nach Abeokuta (Britisch-Nigeria) aufgenommen, zeigen u.a. Leprakranke und Jean Logerais, der ein krankes Kind untersucht. Eine weitere Gruppe von Fotos aus dem Jahr 1908 dokumentiert Logerais' Reise in den Französischen Sudan (Mali) und zeigt Kamelreiter, Ansichten von Kayes und Koulikoro, Porträts von Balafon-Spielern, einheimische Frauen beim Mahlen von Weizen und andere. - Die Abzüge stellenweise an den Rändern stellenweise leicht ausgesilbert, verblasst und mitunter mit meist geringer Bräunung. - Insgesamt historisch bedeutende Originaldokumente und überwiegend klar konturierte, höchst seltene Photos aus der Frühzeit der französischen Kolonialgebiete Dahomey, Senegal und Mali.

Photography – Unique collection of two notebooks and ephemera, containing reports on stays, work and travels in present-day Benin, especially Porto-Novo and Abomey, as well as Lagos (Nigeria), plus rare photographs, including also from present-day Mali. - From the estate of Dr Jean Logerais, who served as chief health officer in Porto-Novo (today's Benin, capital of French Dahomey since 1894) at the beginning of the 20th century. - Notebooks with copies made in the 1910s of 36 letters written between 1902 and 1903 in Porto-Novo and Cotonou by Logerais' wife Juliette to her mother, mainly with vivid descriptions of the medical service in Dahomey and the life of the French upper class living there. - The main text is occasionally illustrated with ink drawings and extensively supplemented by tipped-on or enclosed hand-written or printed ephemera, e.g. a hand-drawn map of Porto Novo showing the hospital, three extensive manuscript reports by Jean Logerais on the celebrations of the French national holiday on 14 July 1902 in Porto Novo, a trip to Lagos (December 1902), another trip to Abomey and the Dan region in Dahomey (March 1903), a list of deaths of French residents in Dahomey (1902-1918) and a chromolithographed postcard 'Souvenir de Dahomé'. - The 61 photos (15 measuring approx. 13 x 18 cm, 10 measuring approx. 12 x 17 cm, 9 measuring approx. 9 x 12 cm, and 27 measuring approx. 7.5 x 11.5 cm) with views of buildings and scenes in Porto-Novo and Cotonou, including the lagoon, the market, a traditional house with carvings, a group portrait with King Toffa I (approx. 1850-1908) and the Logerais couple, portraits of local girls and women, wedding parties, etc. Five of the photos, taken during a trip to Abeokuta (British Nigeria), show lepers and Jean Logerais examining a sick child, among other things. Another group of photos from 1908 documents the Logerais' trip to French Sudan (Mali) and shows camel riders, views of Kayes and Koulikoro, portraits of balafon players, local women grinding wheat, and others. - The photos are slightly silvered in places at the edges, some are slightly faded and occasionally with mostly minor browning. - Overall, historically significant original documents and predominantly contrast-rich, extremely rare photos from the early days of the French colonial territories of Dahomey, Senegal and Mali.
