Photography – Unique collection of 8 very rare original photographs from the early days of Uganda's colonization, and 1 particularly scarce original photograph from Portuguese Guinea, all silver gelatin prints. - Uganda became a British protectorate in 1894 and remained so until 1962. The photographs show (male) and groups of male locals in village scenes and as porters of wood and ivory. One photograph depicts a view on the shore of a lake with numerous locals. The photograph from Portuguese Guinea (now Guinea-Bissau), with extensive handwritten descriptions on the reverse of the backing board, shows four Manjango women amidst baskets in front of a hut. The area had been gradually brought under Portuguese rule since the mid-15th century and functioned primarily as a center of the slave trade from the 16th to the 18th centuries. In 1879, it officially became a colony of Portugal and remained so until 1973. - Some of the photographs are brownish and faded in places.
