Geographie und Reisen – Erste Ausgabe des wichtigen Werks zur Erforschung Sibiriens, hier mit der meist fehlenden zusätzlichen Karte in Lithographie. - Cox I, 194. - Eutin II, 1361. - Henze V, 250. - Ebert 21838 ("Ein in linguistischer Hinsicht sehr wichtiges Werk"). - Brunet V, 558. - Historische, ethnographische und geographische Beschreibung Russlands und insbesondere Sibiriens durch den Schweden Philip Johan Tabbert von Strahlenberg (1677-1747), der durch seine Kriegsgefangenschaft im Zuge des Nordischen Krieges von 1709 v.a. Teile Westsibiriens aus eigener Anschauung sehr gut kannte. Auf Vorschlag von Strahlenberg wurde der Ural seither als Europas Grenze angesehen. Behandelt auch Entdeckungsreisen in Kamtschatka (Bering, Schirikow, Spangenberg) u. Sprachen tartarischer Völker (hierzu die Tabelle mit einem kalmückischen Vokabular und die großformatige Tab. "Harmonia Linguarum"). - Die 68,5 x 100,5 cm große, ursprünglich separat als Kupferstich von 2 Platten erschienene Asien-Karte "Nova descriptio geographica Tattariae Magnae" - lange Zeit die genaueste Darstellung des Gebiets - hier in einer 1879 originalgetreu lithographierten Reproduktion, welche im Zuge der Veröffentlichung eines von A. Strindberg gleichenjahrs vor der "Schwedischen Gesellschaft für Anthropologie und Geographie" gehaltenen Vortrags zum Thema verfertigt worden war. Der Aufsatz (erschienen in Bd. I, Nr. 6, 1876, Ss. 1-12 der Zs. der Ges.) liegt bei. - Die mit 10 Kupfern vollständige Tafelsatz irrig nummeriert mit I-VI, IX, XI, XII, XXI, die ebenfalls vollständig vorhandenen Textholzschnitte bzw. Karte im Holzschnitt nummeriert mit X (umfasst 3 S.), VII, VIII, XIII-XVIII, XIX (Karte) u. XX. - Lith. Karte mit geringen Randläsuren und etw. gebräunt, Buchblock an den Rändern teils gering stock-, finger- und schmutzfleckig, sonst gut erhaltens, repräsentatives Exemplar des seltenen Werks.

Geography and Travel – First edition of this early and important work on the exploration of Siberia, here with the rare, separately published map in lithographic repro from 1879. An abundantly illustrated work, with 10 folding copper engraved plates, 9 full-pages wood-cut illustrations (one of which spans 3 pages), 1 folding wood-cut map, 6 mostly large vignettes and decorative frames in wood-cut and 1 folding table. Bound in contemporary vellum with hand-written title on spine and uniformly red edges. - For references see above. - Historical, ethnographic and geographical description of Russia and Siberia in particular, written by the Swede Philip Johan Tabbert von Strahlenberg (1677-1747), who, as a prisoner of war during the Great Northern War of 1709, was very familiar with parts of Western Siberia from his own observations. On Strahlenberg's suggestion, the Urals have since been regarded as Europe's border. Also covers voyages of discovery in Kamchatka (Bering, Shirikov, Spangenberg) and the languages of the Tatar peoples (see the table with a Kalmyk vocabulary and the large-format table 'Harmonia Linguarum'). - The map of Asia 'Nova descriptio geographica Tattariae Magnae' - the most accurate map of this region for a long time - originally included separately as a large-format (68.5 x 100.5 cm) copper engraving printed of two plates, is shown here in a faithful lithographic reproduction from 1879, which was produced in the course of the publication of a lecture on the subject given by scholar A. Strindberg to the 'Swedish Society for Anthropology and Geography'. The essay (published in vol. I, no. 6, 1876, pp. 1-12 of the journal of the society) is included. - The complete set of 10 folding copper engraved plates is incorrectly numbered in the plates I-VI, IX, XI, XII, XXI, while the wood-cut illustrations and map, which are also complete, are numbered X (spans over 3 pages), VII, VIII, XIII-XVIII, XIX (map) and XX. - Lithographic map with minor tears at margins and some browning, book-block with very minor foxing, soiling and finger-stains at margins, otherwise a well preserved, representative copy of this rare work.
