China

Geographie und Reisen – Vgl. Victoria and Albert Museum, London, D.283-1886. - Papier altersbedingt teils leicht gebräunt, teilw. partiell blass stockfleckig. Je Ränder leicht unregelmäßig und teils etw. bestoßen. Insgesamt sehr gut.

Geography and Travel – Gouache on pith paper. Each mounted on a underlying mat and in a passe-partout. - Magnificently executed gouaches on laid paper, created in the tradition of the Gongbi technique, whose finely contoured, opaque leaves with nuanced shading bear witness to the precise formal language of classical Chinese flower-and-bird painting. The depictions - birds combined with flowering branches such as peonies, magnolias, roses, lilies and camellias - correspond to the canonical motifs of this genre. The works originate from the context of Chinese export painting, which established itself in Guangzhou in the 19th century for the European and American markets; the characteristic surface texture of the rice paper is typical of this production tradition. The motifs are tailored in their respective compositions to Western collectors whilst simultaneously drawing on the symbolic imagery of Chinese art: flowers such as peonies and magnolias symbolise prosperity, beauty and honour, whilst birds embody concepts such as happiness, harmony and vitality. In export painting, these meanings are conveyed in a simplified, decoratively legible form, thus reflecting the cultural exchange within the context of trade with China. - Comparable sets are held, amongst others, in the British Museum and the Victoria & Albert Museum. - Paper partly slightly browned due to age, with some areas showing pale foxing. Edges slightly irregular and partly slightly bumped. Overall very good.
