Pop Art – The Tramp. 1974. Colour aquatint in pinkish beige with embossing and collaged photograph in colour offset on strong, finely grained wove paper. 72 x 46 cm (78.5 x 56.5 cm). Signed, dated and numbered. - Slight creasing in the top and bottom margins. Overall very good. Splendid, finely nuanced impression and strong embossing. With margins, two sides with deckle edges. - One of 300 copies. Published by the artist's independent imprint 'Untitled Press', Captiva Island, Florida (dry stamp on the bottom left, black stamp on the back). - 'The Tramp' dates from a period in the early 1970s when Rauschenberg was experimenting with printmaking techniques, combining them and bringing together different media and elements in a collage-like manner on the picture surface, thus allowing concept and technique to merge. In 'The Tramp,' a photograph, an embossing, and translucent layers of paper masterfully executed in aquatint technique merge into a multi-layered material structure. The arrangement appears almost spatial, yet remains committed to the flatness of the medium. In this way, Rauschenberg reflects on the tension between tactile presence and pictorial illusion, thereby furthering the idea of 'combine paintings.' Different materials and media combine to form a haptically experienceable unity, while at the same time referring to the permeability of art and everyday life.
