Lot 443 Robert Rauschenberg. Subtotal. Aus: Stoned Moon …

Subtotal. Aus: Stoned Moon Series. 1971. Farblithographie auf leicht genarbtem Velin. 21 x 32 cm.

Pop Art – Colour lithograph on lightly grained wove paper. Signed, numbered and dated and with the publisher's embossed stamp. Verso with traces of earlier mounting. - Overall very good. Excellent, finely drawn impression with a distinctly chalky effect, the colour fresh. - One of 500 copies. - Ed. Gemini. Los Angeles 1971. - In the context of the "Stoned Moon" series, Rauschenberg processed materials and images from the NASA archives - including flight diagrams, lunar landscapes and technological images - and combined them with hand-drawn elements and personal topography. The composition of Sub-Total initially appears abstract: lines, surfaces and colour spaces overlap, the print structure is tangible and conveys both a certain restlessness and media distance. At the same time, a thematisation of visions of space travel, cosmic grandeur and scientific abstraction can be discerned: The "moon" is not shown symbolically, but as visual material. In this pictorial logic, Rauschenberg negotiates the boundary between scientific documentation and artistic gesture.
