Lot 375 Julian Rosefeldt. Manifesto (Sonderedition 1). …

Manifesto (Sonderedition 1). 2016.

Contemporary Art – Photograph on photographic paper, mounted in a passepartout with typographic lettering and C-print inscription. Signed and numbered on the reverse. - Overall very good condition. -One of 20 copies. - Julian Rosefeldt's project Manifesto arose from an intensive examination of feminist positions and historical artist manifestos. From over 50 sources - ranging from the Futurist Manifesto of 1909 to contemporary texts by Jim Jarmusch, among others - Rosefeldt developed twelve collaged texts that can be read as a polyphonic "manifesto of manifestos". In a conscious break with the male-dominated history of manifesto writing, he had all the texts spoken by a woman: the actress Cate Blanchett. In twelve different roles-from teacher to homeless woman-she embodies not the content of the manifestos, but their attitude, pathos, and urgency. This photograph from the special edition shows Blanchett (in the original film context as Mierle Laderman Ukeles) in combination with a famous quote by Kazimir Malevich: "Art requires truth, not sincerity." This connection once again sums up Rosefeldt's central concern: artistic truth lies not in individual sensibilities, but in attitude - in the manifested claim to understand art as an expression of social responsibility and intellectual independence.
