Lot 376 Thomas Ruff. A.J. 01 (Badezimmer Radisson …

A.J. 01 (Badezimmer Radisson SAS). 2009. Farboffsetlithographie auf Arches Velin. 53,5 x 40 cm.

Contemporary Art – Colour offset lithograph on Arches wove paper. Signed and numbered. - Sheet partially delicately creased in margins and edges partially slightly bumped. Verso some pale stains. Overall very good with a brilliant, velvety impression, the colour fresh and nuanced. - Schellmann 164. - One of 100 copies. - This work by Thomas Ruff shows an anonymous hotel bathroom with precise, almost documentary clarity. The matter-of-fact, sober depiction of the room with its standardised aesthetics, clear lines and the lighting through the window refers to his ongoing interest in the medial representation of reality. Following on from his early series such as Interiors or Portraits, here he once again examines how everyday architecture and visual standardisation shape our perception of space. The combination of technical perfection and distance in terms of content leads to an almost de-emotionalised pictorial effect, which nevertheless raises questions about intimacy, functionality and individuality in standardised space. The work is exemplary of Ruff's conceptual photography, in which the image is not only an image but also an instrument of analysis.
