Zeitgenössische Kunst – WVZ 1990, 10.8. - In der vorliegenden Arbeit transformiert Olaf Metzel Symbole der Gewalt- und Protestkultur der Hamburger Hausbesetzerbewegung in ein Spannungsfeld zwischen dokumentarischer Referenz und expressivem Zugriff, indem er visuelle Zeichen der Auseinandersetzungen um die Hamburger Hafenstraße aufgreift: Wurfeisen und Zwille fungieren hier als Sinnbilder für Widerstand, Improvisation und urbane Eskalation. Besonders prägnant sind die mit Kohle gezeichneten, wabenförmigen Strukturen, die sich über das Bildfeld legen und an architektonische Raster oder Schutzgitter erinnern und damit wie abstrahierte Chiffren für Kontrolle, Eingrenzung und gesellschaftliche Repression wirken. Gleichzeitig durchbrechen sie die fotografische Ebene, überlagern das Motiv und erzeugen eine Bildarchitektur, die zwischen Struktur und Störung oszilliert.

Good overall. - In this work, Olaf Metzel transforms symbols of the violence and protest culture of the Hamburg squatters' movement into a field of tension between documentary reference and expressive access by taking up visual signs of the clashes around Hamburg's Hafenstraße: Throwing irons and slingshots function here as symbols of resistance, improvisation and urban escalation. Particularly striking are the honeycomb structures drawn with charcoal, which are superimposed over the image field and are reminiscent of architectural grids or protective grilles, thus appearing like abstract ciphers for control, containment and social repression. At the same time, they break through the photographic plane, overlay the motif and create an image architecture that oscillates between structure and disruption.
