Splendid work with delicate colouring. - Lothar Zitzmann's portrait of a woman reveals the characteristic combination of figurative representation and painterly abstraction that characterises his work. In this mixed media work on hardboard, fine graphic elements are combined with impasto layers of paint to create a dense, atmospherically charged composition. The female figure is not intended as a classical portrait in the sense of external resemblance, but appears as an expression of her inner contemplation and rapture. Zitzmann, who is considered part of the so-called Leipzig School, developed an unmistakable visual language in his work, combining the expressive potential of colour with a deep interest in the representation of people. The hardboard as a support gives the painting surface a matt, earthy presence, while the multi-layered application of paint oscillates between transparency and density.
