Unterlage der Skizze. - Wir danken Frau Dr. Karoline Feulner, Max Slevogt-Forschungszentrum, GDKE, Landesmuseum Mainz, für die wertvollen Hinweise und Bestätigung der Authentizität der Arbeit. - Max Slevogt, der neben Max Liebermann und Lovis Corinth zur sog. berühmten Berliner Künstlertrias zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts gilt, bricht im Februar 1914 zu einer langersehnten Reise nach Ägypten auf. In kürzester Zeit entstehen zahlreiche Gemälde, Zeichungen und Aquarelle, die in ihrer Intensität und Geschlossenheit zu den Hauptwerken impressionistischer Landschaftsmalerei gezählt werden. Schnellen, sicheren Striches und en plein air hält Slevogt den Triester Hafen am 13. Februar 1914 um 12 Uhr fest, unter dem Eindruck des geschäftigen Treibens an der warmen Adriaküste. In einem Brief an seine Frau aus Kairo schreibt er: ... ich habe eben ein kleines Aquarell No 1 vom Balkon aus gemalt und freue mich, wieder fleißig zu sein ..." Unser Aquarell galt bisher als verschollen.

Colours fresh. - On frame's back woth a handwritten confirmation by the former director of Kunsthalle Bremen, Dr. Emil Waldmann. This the former sketch's mat. - Provenance: Berlin private collection. - We would like to thank Dr Karoline Feulner for the confirmation of the authenticity of the work. - In February 1914, Max Slevogt sets off on a long-awaited trip to Egypt. In a very short time, he produces numerous paintings, drawings and watercolours, which, in their intensity and coherence, are considered to be among the major works of Impressionist landscape painting. - Our watercolour was considered lost up to now.
