Klassische Moderne – Pfeiffer war Schüler am Bauhaus in Dessau bei Wassily Kandinsky und Paul Klee. Neben dem Studium erfolgte ein Aufenthalt an der Hochschule für Chemie in Bonn bei seinem Onkel, der Pfeiffer in seinem Personalstil paradigmatisch prägte. Während der Assistenz bei chemischen Versuchen entwickelt er ein Verfahren, in Aquarell auf Leinwand zu malen. Die sog. Chromatologie wandte Pfeiffer nun häufig bei seinen abstrakten Kompositionen an und entwickelte sie zu einem Charakteristikum seiner Kunst. Mit seiner Experimentierfreudigkeit entsprach er dem neu gewonnen Selbstverständnis und Inszenierungswillen der Avantgarde.
