In Punkten auf Unterlage montiert, freistehend im Passepartout. - Papierbedingt leicht angebräunt, im Rand partiell schwach knickspurig, im Bereich der Montierung teils minimal fingerfleckig. Insgesamt gut. In kräftigen Bleistiftstrichen erfasste, stimmungsgeladene Szene.

Klassische Moderne – Aus dem Nachlass des Künstlers, verso mit dem Nachlassstempel. - Die Zeichnung "Im Gerichtssaal" entstand während einer für den Künstler politisch aktiven Phase im Berlin der frühen Weimarer Republik. Schlichter selbst war als Mitglied der KPD sowie der Novembergruppe gesellschaftlich engagiert, weshalb seine Werke dieser Zeit nicht selten von politischer Schärfe geprägt sind. - Im Zentrum der Zeichnung steht ein Richter, dessen massige Gestalt und herrische Geste, der ausgestreckte Arm und das weit geöffnete, rufende Mundwerk, den autoritären Anspruch der Justiz unterstreichen. Mit wenigen, aber prägnanten Linien und einer überzeichneten Mimik karikiert Schlichter die Figur als Symbol staatlicher Macht. Der nur schemenhaft erfasste Hintergrund belässt den Fokus ganz auf der übersteigerten Darstellung der Autorität und kann somit zugleich als kritischer Kommentar zur gesellschaftlichen Ungleichheit jener Lage verstanden werden.

Spot-mounted on backing, free-standing in mat. - Slightly browned due to paper, partially faint crease marks in the margins, minimal finger spotting in the area of the mounting. Overall in good condition. Evocative scene captured in bold pencil strokes. - From the artist's estate (with stamp on verso). - The drawing In the Courtroom was created during a politically active period in Rudolf Schlichter's life in early Weimar-era Berlin. As a member of the Communist Party and the Novembergruppe, Schlichter was socially engaged, and many of his works from this time reflect a sharp political stance. At the center of the drawing stands a judge whose bulky figure and commanding gesture emphasize the authoritarian nature of the judiciary. With minimal yet expressive lines and exaggerated facial features, Schlichter caricatures the judge as a symbol of state power. The barely indicated background keeps the focus on this overstated authority figure, serving as a critical commentary on the social injustice of the time.
