Neue Sachlichkeit

Classical Modernism – Pen and pencil on lightly textured wove paper. Signed, dated and titled. On verso in the upper margin spot-mounted to backing. - Paper slightly browned, corners minimally and barely noticeably bumped, only a few minimal stains. Overall very good. Exceptionally dynamic and expressive drawing. - With lively, expressive strokes, the artist brings a scene full of movement and drama to paper, depicting a monk in the wake of a shipwreck, surrounded by violent waves and washed ashore by a massive swell. The scene originates from a late series of works by Schlichter, which is based on the oldest Arabic version of the legendary Oriental tales. In contrast to his early, often politically influenced works, he primarily explored religious and mythical themes in his later years, developing them into magnificent, vivid imagery.
