o.T. (Liegender weiblicher Akt). Aquarell über Bleistift und Kohle auf chamoisfarbenem Vergé. 17,5 x 23,5 cm. Monogrammiert. - Technikbedingt etwas gewellt. Kleiner Braunfleck im oberen Rand. Im unteren Rand verso mit Fleck, dieser recto etwas durchschlagend. Lebendige Arbeit mit viel Verve und harmonischem Kolorit.

Klassische Moderne – Provenienz: Aus dem Nachlass der Künstlerin. - Hamburger Privatbesitz. - Wir danken der Galerie Herold, Hamburg für wertvolle Auskünfte. - - Bereits in frühen Jahren entdeckt Dorothea Maetzel-Johannsen ihr Mal- und Zeichentalent. Sie erlernt schließlich in Hamburg den Beruf der Zeichenlehrerin. Zwischen 1911 und 1918 reiste sie wiederholt nach Berlin, wo ihr frisch angetrauter Mann, der Künstler Emil Maetzel, seinen Kriegsdienst leistet, und nimmt dort Unterricht bei Lovis Corinth. Zusammen mit ihrem Ehemann gehört die Künstlerin 1919 zu den Mitbegründern der Hamburgischen Sezession. In dieser Zeit entwickelt sie einen expressionistisch anmutenden Stil, der jedoch auf Aggressivität verzichtet und weiterhin von früheren, kontemplativen Stillleben im Geiste Cézannes geprägt ist. 1923 gestaltet sie Wandgemälde in der Hamburger Kunsthalle. Ein anschließender Frankreich-Aufenthalt und die dortige Auseinandersetzung mit den "Fauves" wird die letzten Jahre ihres Schaffens bis zu ihrem frühen Tod im Alter von 44 Jahren stark prägen.
